Wear ‘Em Out Pads Review

As you may know, I love anything that reduces single use plastic consumption, and have been using reusable pads myself for a couple of years. As a sewist, I’ve even made my own!

We cannot go on using plastic as we have for the last 60 years! And it is quite dreadful to think that some of the plastic pads that I used in my 20s are not going to degrade for over 800 years – if ever! I also dread to think how much money I have spent on sanitary products over the years. So reusable pads are a really important step out of this plastic mess.

If reusable pads had been an option to me 40 years ago when I started my period then I am sure I would have made the switch. There are just so many benefits to making the change.

Benefits Of Wearing Reusable Sanitary Pads

  • You will feel good about saving the planet – as you reduce your single use plastic consumption
  • It will save you money – in the long run
  • You’ll have less skin reactions – so many nasty chemicals, artificial fragrances and adhesives are in disposable sanitary pads!
  • They are comfortable and soft to wear.

I’ve been used to all these benefits over the last 2-3 years, but I really was looking forward to trying a different brand from my homemade set.

Who Are Wear Em Out?

Wear ‘Em Out make an award-winning reusable pad system and accessories. They make them here in the UK and ship worldwide.

Do go check out their Instagram account – where they talk about their philosophy and why we need to move to #anewwaytoperiod

They are a great believer in diversity and inclusion – so their pads are for

  • women and people who have periods
  • women and people post op
  • people with bladder issues and
  • women and people who are post-natal.

Their pads have four layers – all of which have been chose to provide maximum comfort and absorbency in use.

But what are their pads like? We were sent a lovely set of their pads to discover for ourselves.

Our Wear Em Out Pads And Accessories

Our review box from Wear 'Em Out

For our Wear ‘Em Out pads review we were sent a box containing all the absorbencies in the range bar the Mega-Mega Flo – which has been designed for extra heavy night-time or postpartum use. Plus we were also sent some of the other pad accessories that have been designed by Wear ‘Em Out. And some gorgeous extra goodies… thank you!

But what pads were we sent?

2 x The Mini Flo Reusable Pad

Wear 'Em Out Mini Flo Pads

This is the smallest pad in the range. Designed for lighter days, great for younger girls, the Mini Flo can also be used as a panty liner.

It measures 6.3 cm (2.45 inches) wide in the centre and is 17.5 cm (6.8 inches) long. Two poppers attach it to your knicker gusset.

We were sent 2 designs, the limited edition Liz Harry ‘We Bloom‘ design and the Ocean Wave design.

2 x The Medium Flo Reusable Pad

Wear 'Em Out Medium Flo Pads

The Medium Flo pad is your go-to for those in-between, business-as-usual period days. It can also be used for leaky bladders. This pad was perfect for my daytime use.

It measures 6.5 cm (2.55 inches) wide at the middle and is 22 cm (8.6 inches) long. Again it has two poppers to attach it.

We were sent two designs, the Ocean Wave design and the Navy Wear ‘Em Out print.

2 x The Mega Flow Reusable Pad

Wear 'Em Out Mega Flo Pads

The Mega Flo pad is longer and does seem that little bit thicker, so it is perfect for heavy period days and night-time use.

We received the Wear ’em Out Liz Harry Limited Edition ‘We Bloom’ design and a Navy Wear ‘Em Out print.

These measure 7 cm (2.75 Inches) wide at the middle and are 26 cm (10.25 Inches) long.

A Wear Me – Wash Me Out and About Bag

Out And About bag from Wear 'Em Out

Next in our box is this Out And About Bag – which is divided into 2 individual sections. Perfect for knowing what is clean and what is not!

It has a single zip across the top which makes it leakproof, and poppers on the side which give a size reducing option.

Finally, it’s made from washable, waterproof fabric. So it can be put in your machine (up to 40°) when it gets dirty.

Storage Bag For Your Reusable Sanitary Pads

Storage bag from Wear 'Em Out

Lastly, we were sent a storage bag which is the right size to hold everything.

Use it to store your rinsed pads ready for washing. Or use it to store your freshly washed pads ready for next month. To wash, just pop it in the machine along with your used pads, and it’s ready to go for next month.

Washing / Drying Your Wear ’em Out Pads

Lots of people start to squirm a bit when you discuss washing a used pad. But actually it is no more icky than washing a used nappy. You just need to be a little bit more organised.

When you are out on the go, use a waterproof storage bag to keep your used pads. Then rinse or soak them in cold water as soon as you can after they have been removed. This minimises staining. Then, when you are ready you can wash the pads by hand or in the washing machine. (Maybe even consider taking them into the shower and washing them at the same time!)

They can go in with the rest of your laundry up to a 40°C wash. Don’t use fabric conditioner as this affects the absorbency of the fabric on the pad.

For drying, you can hang them on your washing line (the sun also removes some stains), on dry on an airer or in the airing cupboard. But don’t put them into the tumble dryer or place onto direct heat as the pads may shrink.

Once you get into the habit, you will wonder why it took so long to make the change!

What We Thought Of The Pads

We absolutely love the range of pads. The 4 sizes pretty much cover all eventualities. They also look so pretty, especially the limited edition ‘We Bloom‘ ones!

They easily pop into place and feel so secure. And I love the fact that the dark top layer is absorbent yet hides the staining well.

And lastly they are incredibly soft and comfortable!

As someone who suffers from the occasional bladder leakage now I’m older (thanks, childbirth!) the Mini Flo  is the perfect size for everyday wear. Plus, as my little girl comes up to period age I am sure this size would be perfect for her starting out on her period journey too!

The Medium And Mega Flo are great for having during the inevitable ebb and flow of a standard menstural cycle, the Mega Flo being brilliant for overnight protection.

They fold up to an incredibly small size, so are unobtrusive in your bag. This will be so important for teenage girls I am sure! And I love the storage bags, these are so vital when using reusable pads on the go.

If I have one criticism, it is that the pads are not compostable, even if you cut them up. They use polyester and other man made materials. So at the end of their life they too take some time to degrade. However, Wear ‘Em Out estimate that a pad can last up to 4 years, so this is still a great trade off when you think how much single use plastic your disposables will have contained had you still been using them over that time.

It may seem expensive to buy a couple of packs of these initially, but I promise you it will save you so much in the long run. And you won’t be disappointed!

And Now It’s Time For A Giveaway!

Furthermore, you can win your own set, as the Wear ‘Em Out team have offered the chance to win either a heavier trial pack OR a lighter trial pack . Each of these packs has 3 pads of different sizes so you can try them all before you purchase more. Which one would you choose if you won?

I’d probably choose the heavier flow pack. I’ve just bought my first re-usable cloth pad and I was a little disappointed to see how bulky it looks – But these ones definitely look thinner and a really great design too.
