Do you know someone who is forever losing their hair bobbles? Do you have a load of leggings that are so old and / or full of holes so that they really need to go into the trash? Well today here is a great idea for how to upcycle old leggings to make something useful instead of sending that fabric to landfill. I am going to show you how to make some head bands and hair bobbles from old leggings (or tights)
Upcycle Old Leggings To Make Hair Bobbles And Head Bands
My daughter often wears out her leggings completely. She gets holes in the knees from falling, and holes in the top from pulling them on too roughly. And at nearly 6 she also grows out of them too quickly.
Do you too have a load of leggings that are too worn? Or too full of holes to go to the thrift shop?
I hate throwing any fabric away, and love to use every scrap, so here is a simple way to use up these leggings that would have to be thrown away otherwise.
You will need
- Old leggings
- A pair of sharp scissors.
And THATS IT.
As a sewing fan, I do have incredibly sharp fabric scissors. But there is no need for any fancy dancy equipment here. Any sharp kitchen or craft scissors will do just as well. If you have a rotary cutter and mat that is also good. But really not necessary.
Just cut straight across the leg of the leggings. And then make a second cut about an inch (2.5cm) above the first.
This gives you a ring of fabric.
Pull the ring taut…and Hey Presto! Instant hair bobble. Yes, they need to be wound round a couple more times, but they do the job just as well, and I am betting that no-one will notice much of a difference.
(Note: You can also use tights for this, but if they are thin tights you may need to cut a thicker band of tight fabric. )
We made some from Elizabeth’s old bobbly school tights. Can you tell a difference?

BONUS – Make A Quick And Easy Makeup Headband Too
Just cut all the way across the body of the leggings, and then make another cut a couple of inches above the first this time. And you have the quickest headband ever.
It may not be the most glamorous, and so you may just want to use it when putting makeup on. But it just does mean less fabric going to landfill, and will mean that you don’t need to buy a makeup headband ever again!
Save money and the planet.
Do you think that you will be doing these quick and easy upcycling ideas?
I love to use all my fabric scraps. If I have jersey pieces left over my favourite project is a rag rug.
And see here for loads of other ideas on how to use your scrap fabric.
