Venice

With more than 40 art galleries in the city, breathtaking bridge structures, and the ever-famous Venice Carnival in February every year, you will be glad you traveled to this city! Plus, you will be mostly traveling by foot or by boat since there are only canals in the city. Not driving around can help you take in the beauty of it all more carefully during your visit.

Art Galleries Throughout Venice

You’d have to take an entire month’s stay in Venice to explore the more than 40 art galleries in the city. However, we have picked out 3 of the top art galleries for you to consider exploring when compiling your visit itinerary to relish in the best art-browsing experience the city has to offer.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Peggy Guggenheim was a prominent 20th-century American art collector until she died in 1979 at the age of 81. Some of her favorite paintings were from artists such as Jackson Pollock and Vasily Kandinsky. The most popular art movements featured in her collection include the Dada, Abstract Expressionism, and Surrealist movements.

Her marriages throughout her lifetime were even to artists she met on her journey, including her first husband, Laurence Vail, who was a Dadaist, and a Surrealist artist named Max Ernst. Guggenheim was married to Vail from 1922 to 1930 and remarried to Ernst from 1942 to 1946.

Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art

The Pesaro family palace’s construction began in 1659 and they eventually asked Gian Antonio Gaspari to complete the palace building. The first modern art collection arrived in the museum in 1897. A few years later, the City of Venice said that now Ca’ Pesaro Palace would be the official place for the International Gallery of Modern Art.

The gallery prioritized showcasing European art until the 1950s when the International Gallery of Modern Art agreed with the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome to also feature Biennale Italian art pieces. Venetian art from the 19th century is highly popular in this venue, too.

Gallerie dell’Accademia

Gallerie dell’Accademia features various exhibitions of art from before the 19th century that change every few months. They partner with other local museums to temporarily feature pieces they own in the Gallerie dell’Accademia exhibits. For example, they are showcasing Madonna in Red sourced from the Sorlini Art Museum from the time of writing until April 7, 2024.

Visit their free guided tours page to find an art gallery that interests you the most to book your trip around the time the tour in which you are interested will take place. Tours of various galleries are usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays so plan accordingly.

The Carnival Festival Annually In February

The Venice Carnival Festival is rich in its history starting back in 1162 when Venetians celebrated their victory over the Patriarch. Francis II unfortunately outlawed the festival in 1797, so the yearly carnival was celebrated privately until the Italian government revived these traditions in 1979.

This year’s Venice Carnival Festival starts on February 2nd this year and runs select days until the end of February 13, 2024. Take the Carnival Party Cruise on the Galleon to taste the best Venetian dishes featured in their on-site buffet. The buffet will feature octopus salad, grilled vegetables, artichoke risotto, meat skewers, and of course, different kinds of pizza. Don’t forget to wash it all down with the traditional Venetian drink, Spritz. Riding the Galleon on this party cruise will grant you the best sites of Burano, Murano, and Torcello.
