Do you feel as if you need to bring the spring indoors this year? Spring is my favourite season and spring garlands are a unique and brilliant decorating idea to cheer up your home. Personally, I always wanted to make a spring mantel garland, so this year I was inspired to make this statement DIY spring garland indoor decoration depicting bees, rabbits, green leaves carrots and flowers.

The brilliant thing about this handmade spring floral garland made with felt and wool is that most children can make the pompoms, though they may need adult help with the glue gun. And if you really wanted, you could also use this technique to make a spring wreath, perhaps adding more greenery.

Pom Poms are one of my favourite things. They are so easy to make, fun, colourful, and can easily be used as lovely decor. (See some of our Christmas Pom pom decorations and wreaths here) No more needing to shop around and source a garland at the right price. We decided for the spring garland it should feature some of our favourite spring creatures. So we chose bunnies and bees.

You will need:

PomPom Spring garland.

My mantlepiece is about 1.4 metres wide, so I estimated that I would need about 5 pom pom creatures interspersed with some felt decorations.

Pom Pom rabbits

I made large white pom poms, then cut out two large ovals of white felt, and two slightly smaller ovals of pink felt. I glued these together using the glue gun. Finally I attached the ears to the pom pom with more glue from the gun, sticking the ears into the centre of the pom pom as far as they would go.

I made a nose by cutting a small heart shape of white felt, then cutting off the tip. Adding a pink roundish piece of felt with a glue gun, I attached the whole nose piece to the front of the rabbit pom pom again using the glue gun. And finally I attached googly eyes.

Making the Bees

To make the bee pom poms, you have to alternate the black and yellow on the pom pom maker, so when the pom pom maker is closed you can see the striped markings.

Then, once the pom pom is tied and secure, I added two wings to each bee. Again, these are heart shaped pieces of white felt with the tips cut off. I added googly eyes and a little black smiley mouth.

Making Flowers For Garlands

Lastly I love a flowering garland, so I made some felt carrot and garland flower shapes and glued these with the glue gun.

Assembling the Garland

I measured the twine I was using and made small marks at equidistant points along the length. I threaded the twine through each pompom, then tied the twine so that the pom poms were fixed in place. Lastly, once I had attached all the pompom animals, I added the felt decorations in-between to finish off the spring garland.

Pompom Spring Garland - finished

And you have a finished spring garland for mantel or inner decor! Plus, if you want a spring garland with lights, you can always add a thin string of LEDs, winding these around the string.

Once spring is over and you want to redecorate for summer, do care for your garland by ensuring it doesnt get tangled and store it somewhere safe for next year.

I love my new room garland! I would love to know how you get on if you make your own Pom pom Spring Garland. Hey Jo! I tried doing pom-poms once and I didn’t like the outcome so much. I failed and I guess I need more practice 😉 I will try this cute spring project this weekend and see how it goes.
