With all the viruses currently going around, hand hygiene is more important than ever. But if you are anything like me, you struggle to find your hand gel at the bottom of your bag. So here is a great way to keep your sanitiser gel to hand – so to speak! How to make a hand sanitizer holder keychain that clips to your bag – in 5 minutes!

Make A DIY Hand Sanitizer Holder Keychain

I’ve seen lots of hand gel holders on Pinterest etc. But a lot of them involve patterns, and are all complicated with elastic etc.

This holder is SO simple, you can make it in a few minutes. Make them for all your friends and relatives – or your mum for Mother’s Day. Don’t forget your teachers and workmates. These make great gifts.

These holders hold the small bottles that you can carry around – up to around 50-60ml.

You Will Need

Materials needed

As this fabric is very thick you will probably need a size 90 leather needle in your sewing machine to sew it effectively.

How To Make A Hand Sanitiser Gel Holder

Take a piece of fabric 4.5 inches by 5.5inches (12cm by 14cm) and a piece of ribbon about 3 inches (9cm) long.

Turn over one of the long sides 0.75 inches (2cm) and place the ribbon doubled over around 0.5inch (1cm) from the edge. Sew a seam over this, around 5/8 inch (1.5cm) from the top edge, making sure to sew over the ribbon and backstitch at both ends.

I also like to do a second row of stitching over the ribbon to secure it.

Right sides together, fold the piece so that the short sides are together. Sew a scant seam allowance around the sides, again back stitching at the beginning and end, pay special attention to sewing to secure the top.

Clip the seam allowance and clip the corner. Turn the piece inside out and push out the corners.

Making the holder part 2

Using a sharp thin bradawl or thick darning needle make two holes about half an inch (1cm) apart from the top of the holder on one side. Make sure you go through 2 layers of fabric each time. Take 4 inches (11-12cm) of the elastic cord and thread it through these holes – tying a knot inside. This makes a loop of elastic on the outside of the holder. The elastic loop should be just long enough to hold over the top of a sanitiser gel when placed inside the holder.

Elastic over the top of the sanitiser gel

Thread a keyring holder/lobster clasp onto the ribbon.

And you have a finished hand sanitiser gel holder!

Make them in all colours to coordinate with all your bags. And never search for your sanitiser gel again!

    What a great little solution.
If you make another could you take a few more photos of the elastic bit? On the dark fabric I am not exactly sure what you did, is the elastic a loop that goes over the outside of the pouch and catches the neck of the bottle? Maybe if I try making one it will all become clear! Thanks

These are brilliant Jo! We get through so many hand sanitisers! Craig never leaves the house without one with him having a very low immune system.
