One of the most common things that we’re all taught from a very early age is that we shouldn’t be selfish. And that’s great advice. However, many of us have taken that idea too much to heart, and especially over the last few months.

Mothers are the most common culprits of this, doing everything for their families and never bothering to worry about their own needs. However, living like that is just going to make you feel exhausted and miserable. It’s crucial that you learn to take time to look after yourself. With that in mind, here are some ways to learn to be just a little bit selfish. It’s okay to be selfish sometimes!

Find little ways to treat yourself

One of the most common things that a lot of people who spend their time focused on others forget is that it’s okay to look after yourself. So why not take the time to treat yourself here and there? It doesn’t need to be in huge or expensive ways. Even simple things like sitting down with a warm cup of coffee and a nice book can be a wonderful little island of comfort for yourself.

Of course, how you treat yourself is entirely up to you! I was recently gifted this Outrider 3/4 length coat from Lighthouse. As we go into spring, it is lovely to have a coat that is long enough to keep out the occasional snow flurry but is light enough to see me through the wet months ahead. I love the colours and the fact that it will keep me warm and dry.

Take time alone

When you’re juggling work, family, and homeschooling, it can often feel impossible to find any time alone. That’s why it’s so important to take time to get away from everyone else when you can. A lot of people feel strange spending time alone as though it’s not something they should be doing, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to hide away and be on your own for a little while every now and then.

Use it as a chance to catch up on all those Netflix shows you keep saying you’ll get round to eventually. Or just get out and about for a walk that gives you the chance to clear your head.

Say No to things

When you constantly have to do things for other people, it starts to become second nature. You don’t even notice that you’re taking on more and more things without thinking about it. However, if you keep doing that, you’re just going to end up burning yourself out. Make sure that you make the effort to say no to things that you don’t want to do. Or that you don’t have time for. A lot of us feel bad doing that but you need to remember that your needs are just as important as anyone else’s.

As with just about anything else in life, it’s incredibly easy to accidentally take this kind of thing too far. Sure, it’s okay to be selfish sometimes when you need a break. And it’s always good to make sure that people aren’t walking all over you. But if you become so fixated on what you want to the point that you stop caring about those around you then that’s going to be a pretty serious problem.

Taking time alone is good for you
