How To Nurture Feelings Of Security In Children

Helping children feel more secure about their environment is challenging. Kids naturally grow with a sense of trepidation to protect them from the world around them.  Of course, you still want them to experience some fear – that’s what’s going to keep them safe as they get older. But you also want them to feel generally happy and not on edge all the time. So, what can you do as a parent? Here are some strategies you might want to use to nurture feelings of security in children:

Establish A Routine

It might be boring, but establishing a routine is an excellent way to help children feel more secure. Having them do the same things every day reduces the risk of the unexpected and allows them to flourish as individuals. 

For example, set times for meals, playtime, and bedtime. Making everything follow a structure ensures children know what’s coming next. It also makes events, like holidays, more memorable because they represent a break from the norm. 

 

Be A Safe Retreat

You can also make your child feel more secure by acting as a safe retreat – someone they can go to if they get into trouble or experience difficulties in their lives. 

Being a safe retreat doesn’t mean pandering to your child all the time. Instead, it is more about letting them know you’ll always be there for them, no matter what happens. 

 

Provide Them With Comforting Toys And Objects

Many children go through a blanket stage where they carry bed sheets around with them everywhere they go. Interestingly, it’s more than just cute. Psychologists believe it serves a real psychological purpose, helping the child adapt to their environment. 

You also see it across cultures. Kids around toddler age always seem to attract objects that they keep close to them at all times. 

Therefore, you might consider getting your child a Steiff teddy bear, plastic toy, blanket, or pillow for them to carry around with them. These props provide a kind of psychological safety, helping them feel freer to explore their environment. 

 

Respond To Their Needs

Another way to nurture feelings of security in children is to respond to their needs. As a parent, you want to show you are actively concerned about their well-being, how they live and so on. 

Spend some time learning and recognising their emotions. Building a picture of what makes them happy or sad can make them feel closer and more connected to you. 

 

Celebrate Their Accomplishments

It’s also critical to celebrate kids’ accomplishments. Highlighting their successes helps them feel more like they have mastery over the world. 

For example, confident children feel secure because they always seem to know what to do next. Less confident kids don’t have this superpower, leading to indecision and freezing. 

 

Spend Quality Time Together

Finally, you can nurture a sense of security in your children by spending more quality time with them. Simply being around during their formative years immediately puts them at an advantage. For example, you could go hiking together or read a book. These activities strengthen bonds.
