This week sees the release of a new eagerly awaited part of the ‘ Among Us’ game. ‘The Airship’ is going to add a fourth game location to the popular mobile whodunnit game, and I am so looking forward to it! In appreciation of one of my favourite games I thought I would bring you a fitting tutorial. Here is how to make an Among Us character to use as a key ring or decoration, so that you can have your favourite crew member with you always.
How To Make An Among Us Character Keyring Or Decoration
Have you played ‘Among Us’? It’s a iPhone and android game that has been really popular over the past year.
I must admit, I am slightly addicted. If you haven’t played, here is the game in a nutshell: you start as part of a crew of spacesuit clad characters of different colours running around a ship doing tasks. But WATCH OUT, as there are up to 3 IMPOSTERS in your midst. They can kill you at any time, and use the ship’s vents to make their escape… Can you finish your tasks in time…or are YOU the IMPOSTER??
It is certainly fun. And this tutorial today is the way to make a great little gift for someone who is as addicted to the game as I am. It’s a quick and simple little make that even a beginner can handle. And It makes a perfect keyring, bag charm, or could even be used as a Christmas decoration!
You can make it in felt, but is just as easy to make in fabric. And it is the perfect way to use up some of your small fabric scraps.
Talking of fabrics scraps…do you love using up every last bit of fabric? Here are a host of other great scrap busting projects!
So shall we go ahead and learn how to make a cute Among Us character? Then read on!
To Make A Felt Among Us Keyring You Will Need
- Coloured felt in your chosen colour, black, light blue/grey and white
- Toy stuffing material – or I like to use the filling from old washed pillows.
- Embroidery cottons in colours to match your felt
- Scissors and needles
- Some ribbon and a bag clasp/lobster clip for clipping to your bag
- A copy of my Among Us Character Template
Cut out felt pieces as indicated by the template. When using the largest pattern part cut your felt piece using the inner line.
Onto the front black piece, sew the character coloured, and blue/grey piece, then sew the white piece onto the blue/grey piece.
Place the front black piece on top of the back character coloured piece. Sew most of the way around starting near the top of the head – using a tight blanket stitch. When you almost reach the top again, leave a small hole. Push padding into the character through the hole until desired filling is reached, add a small loop of ribbon, and tightly sew the hole shut (this area really needs some reinforcing). Add a keyring to the ribbon loop and your keyring is complete!
How To Make A Fabric ‘Among Us’ Keyring
You will need:
- scraps of fabric in various colours
- some bondaweb or other double sided fusing tape
- a hot iron and pressing cloth
- My Among Us Character Template
- Some toy stuffing material or stuffing from old pillows
- a sewing machine and coordinating threads – or hand sewing threads.
- some ribbon and a clasp to hang the resulting decoration from your keys or bag
I bonded some of my different fabrics to the sheet of bondaweb using a hot steam-free iron and a pressing cloth. You do not need to use bondaweb on both front and back largest pieces.
Taking the template, cut out the pieces needed to make up the character design. For the black and back coloured pieces, use the outer line of the template piece as this includes a small seam allowance which will be needed later on when creating the finished article.
I like to draw around the rest of the template pieces onto my bondaweb/fabric pieces. I then cut out these pieces carefully, and remove the backing from the bondaweb. You should be able to see the webbing of the bondaweb on the back of each piece.
Arranged the front character design onto the black backing fabric. Then carefully cover the whole design with a pressing cloth. And again with a steam free iron bond the whole design to the black backing cloth.
You can now do some free motion embroidery. Or appliqué. Or just sew carefully around the character pieces to attach them securely to the fabric.
Yes, the fabric is bonded together, but sewing really is needed to keep everything in place.
Need to know how to do some free-motion embroidery? Find the technique here.
Take the finished panel, and place it right sides together with a backing piece. At the top of the character head, put an inverted loop of ribbon of your desired length
Leaving a 3-4cm (1.5inch) gap in the side, sew all the way around using the 4-5mm seam allowance. Then turn the whole character the right side out. Stuff the character enough to pad slightly. Then use ladder stitch to close the gap you needed for stuffing.
Add a keyring/lobster chain to the ribbon and you are done!
For a tree decoration, make the ribbon slightly longer. And if you really LOVE Among Us, maybe think about adding an extra piece of felt or fabric for a hat?
Do you know someone who loves the game so much that they would love this make? I love to see your makes and find out how you get on making my creations. Do comment below, or why not find me on my socials.
And please do pin this post for later.
