Planning a wedding can be costly. And sometimes it also can feel a little wasteful, as a lot of items will only be used for the one day. So how can you have a more eco-friendly engagement and wedding? Here are some great tips for having a great day without being wasteful, and you can perhaps save a little money too!
Tips for an Eco-Friendly Engagement and Wedding
If you’re passionate about saving the environment, then these tips on how to make your big day a little greener could make your memories all the more special. This doesn’t mean forgoing every luxury you had planned. But simply making smarter choices that damage the planet a little less. You never know, your sustainable touches could inspire your guests to make small changes in their own lives going forward.
Choose Vintage Rings
With thrifting becoming even more popular, buying vintage or preloved rings could help you save the planet. Not only will you be lowering your carbon footprint, but you’ll be connected to past traditions and customs. It doesn’t matter if you prefer emerald or oval engagement rings, you’ll be able to find just about every size and shape if you look carefully enough. Don’t forget, it’s possible to have details adjusted by a jeweller should the fit be a little off.
Go Paperless
Big weddings use a whole lot of paper invitations. So an easy way to cut both costs and your impact on the planet is by going paperless. Emailed invitations can be just as special and even easier to respond to. You’ll be able to quickly track changes and follow up on those who haven’t given you a firm answer. Some people might not think this is as romantic. But at the end of the day the invitations aren’t what you’re going to remember about the best day of your life.
Have Plants Instead of Flowers
Cut flowers have a huge impact on the planet and create a lot of waste. Not only do they use a lot of energy to grow, but they’re only going to be thrown away a week or two after the event. Try to decorate your venue using live potted plants instead or garlands that are going to wilt. You’ll be able to achieve a rustic, natural aesthetic that will pair perfectly with your green-minded outlook on life.
As for your bouquet, choose a sustainable florist in the local area that grows their own blooms and doesn’t import them. If you’re having a winter wedding when these kinds of flowers are hard to come by, choose a dried bouquet.
Rent Don’t Buy
Buying decorations can not only mount up in cost, but create a lot of unnecessary consumption. While it might be tempting to keep the decorations from your wedding, when are you realistically going to use them again? It’s more likely they’ll collect dust in your attic before being donated at a later date. Renting everything you need can save you money and save the planet too. Just think how many weddings your décor will be used for!
Another thing you could consider renting is your dress. Wedding dresses are expensive and rarely worn more than once, but if you must buy your gown and keep it as a memory, try to pick a sustainable brand. There are more and more companies using ethically sourced materials that are kinder to the planet. So you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Do you think that you will use any of these tips> I’d love to hear your comments!
