Walking is the minimum we should be doing for our health. Walking regularly every day reduces your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, depression, and even some forms of cancer. It’s estimated that walking just 150 minutes every week (this breaks down to 21 minutes a day) can add on 3.4 years to your lifespan. Now, if you truly want to make a big difference to your health, you need to walk around 10,000 steps every day. This can seem like a huge amount if you don’t currently walk regularly, but that’s okay. This guide will walk you through the steps it takes to find the motivation to walk more, easily.

Go Where You Want to Walk

motivation to walk more

Walking the uninspiring streets near your home is an easy way to get bored and frustrated with walking. That’s why it’s important to see this walk not just as a way to move, but also as an opportunity to get out in nature. There are so many beautiful vistas and sights to see, anywhere in the UK. Going to areas of outstanding natural beauty is a very easy way to explore trails that offer you beauty every corner you turn.

Challenge Yourself

If you need a challenge to get over that first hurdle of going from sedentary to active, then a challenge can be just the ticket. A charity challenge, to be exact. Marathons may be the most popular kind of charity challenge out there, but that’s just the start.

If you want to motivate yourself to walk more, than start with a charity hike. You can walk the Jurassic coast while supporting a charity like Macmillan, for example, and be supported every step of the way with a training packet and regular rest stops.

Join a Walking Group

There are so many people who want to walk more – just like you – but may struggle doing it on their own. That’s why walking groups can be just what you need to walk more, and stick with it. Try out different walking groups and see which ones you click with. These can be regular walking groups in your area that go the same route every morning just to stay fit. Or it can be a rotating walking club that pick different hikes every time to keep it fresh.

Listen to Audiobooks or Podcasts

If you do want some alone time, but find that simply listening to the sounds of nature is not for you, then try listening to either audiobooks or podcasts instead of just music. These formats can truly suck you into the narrative. Indeed, moving can actually help you focus more on what’s being said to you. Listen to stories this way and you’ll get through books quickly while walking more!

Walk to a Favourite Destination

Another easy way to motivate yourself to walk more is to pick a spot that you truly enjoy. This could be a pub that serves the best Yorkshire pudding or Sunday roast around, or it could be a quiet bench with spectacular views. If you want to get where you want to go, you’ll instantly be more motivated to walk.
