I love making things with my little girl. And as it comes up to Christmas I wanted to think of some zero waste decorations that she could make using things we already have or were going to throw away. So this week we have made these Egg Carton Santa Decorations.
Egg Carton Santa Decorations
I remember fondly making egg carton decorations as a child. But back in the 70s that tended to involve making a hole in the end of the egg box carton piece, smothering it in glitter/plastic and threading a loop from it. These may be slightly more involved, but my little girl had lots of fun. And because they are mainly made by up cycling things that may get thrown away, I am happy in the knowledge that even if they don’t last longer than a couple of Christmases, they have still been pretty zero waste.
You will need
- An old egg box (preferably light coloured but I only had a green one)
- Poster paint – white and red or light pink
- A glue stick or glue gun
- red felt or red scraps of material
- a black marker
- ribbon pieces (around 10cm long)
- some cotton wool, or the inside of an old pillow
- scissors
I cut the 6 egg cup shaped pieces from the egg box (let an adult do this bit). Then Elizabeth painted them pink using the paint. We left them to dry.
Once they were dry, we used the glue stick to glue on some of the fluffy stuffing from an old pillow. I made a small santa hat using red felt and fabric scraps. I glued a loop of ribbon (probably from some old packaging) into the top of the hat before glue sticking the fabric into a cone. Then used a glue gun to attach the hat firmly to the top of the ‘Santa’ head.
Finally we drew faces on each of the Santa heads that we had made.
‘Easy Peasy’ as Elizabeth would say. Simple but effective. We just need to wait until December to hang them on our tree!
These egg carton Santa decorations are that easy that my almost 4 year old can make them. And so are these cards. Do you think these may be on your list to make this year? I’d love to hear about what you are making. Do leave me a comment, or find me on social media.
Have some fabric scraps? See what other items you could make in this post on not wasting a single piece.
And why not pin this post for later?
They look good, easy enough for me to master #pocolo
