Eco Friendly Sewing Projects You Can Make
It is lovely to feel that you are trying to be a little more sustainable. A lot of the disposable products that we use regularly are packed with plastic and chemicals, so ditching these disposable items and swapping them for reusable products is a great way to reduce the waste and be more eco friendly.
It needn’t be overwhelming, just swap out one disposable item at a time for its reusable counterpart, get used to the switch, then keep going until you feel ready to try another reusable item.
A lot of the reusable products are incredibly easy to make at home.
Even better, you could be upcycling and reusing cloth that you already have.
And best and most exciting of all, most of the following eco friendly sewing projects are also really easy beginner sewing projects.
So what can you make at home that is sew eco-friendly? (see what I did there?)
Reusable Kitchen Roll – Unpaper Towels
These are a perfect beginner sewing project, and great for upcycling old towels. I like to quilt mine slightly to stop them bagging and becoming misshapen when washing. Find out how to make them here.
DIY Reusable Makeup Remover Pads
One of my favourite sustainable sewing projects, these are perfect for using up all your scrap fabric too! See how to make your own.
Unsponges – Zero Waste Dish Scrubbers
This also ranks really highly as one of my favourite eco friendly DIY projects. Plastic scrubbers are so bad for the planet. Make your own either with old towels or hessian/burlap. See the tutorial here.
Reusable Bowl Covers
This is one of those perfect summer sewing projects for keeping your picnic food and drink covered. Plus they do keep your food fresh too! Find out how to make them.
Reusable Sandwich Wraps
These reusable sandwich wraps are a brilliant way to transport your lunch instead of using plastic ziplock bags. You could also make snack bags too. But here is the tutorial for the wraps.
Swiffer Mop Cover
Another of my favourite zero waste project ideas, this one can save you so much money. All you need are some old towels. See how here.
Reusable Wet Wipes
This easy DIY means that you can always have reusable wet wipes on the go. See my tutorial here.
Reusable Sanitary Pads
I wish that I had found this idea earlier. But learn how to make and use reusable sanitary pads with my free sewing pattern and tutorial.
Upcycled Towel Pouf
Stop using plastic shower poufs and make one out of an old towel instead! See the full tutorial on how to make one here.
DIY Cloth Napkins
This is probably one of the easiest eco friendly home projects. Instead of disposable napkins, make reusable ones and wash them with your normal wash. Find out how here.
Reusable Produce Bags
Never be caught out getting plastic bags from the store again! I made a load of these reusable produce bags from old clothes and thin old bedding. Find a produce bag sewing pattern and tutorial here.
Soap Saver Bags
These mini bags are perfect for keeping your soap going for longer. You can make them in cotton, muslin or towelling. Personally, I love the mini cotton bags, but find all the sewing tutorials to make these here.
