I love creating something for free. And today’s idea is all about creating something useful from something that you may have been about to donate or throw away. Do you have some old greeting cards stored away? Well, here is how you can make a simple DIY gift box from your old cards!
No printable box template required.
How to Make A DIY Gift Box From An Upcycled Greeting Card
These cute DIY gift boxes are a great way of repurposing your old greeting cards. Some greeting cards are perfect for being recycled. But if they have plastic coatings or glitter they cannot be recycled or donated. So by reusing them to make your own gift boxes you will be being far more sustainable and zero waste!
See my other ideas for simple zero waste gift wrap.
The resulting cardboard gift boxes are quite little, but they are the perfect size for wrapping jewellery, chocolates, money or your home made gifts. Any small unusually shaped gift ideas in fact. And I’m sure any loved one that gets one of these very personal homemade gift boxes will be delighted.
So are you ready for an easy tutorial on how to make a gift box step by step? Then read on!
For Making Gift Boxes You Will Need
- An old birthday card, Christmas card or occasion card. I prefer these to be on the larger side as that makes a larger box.
- Scissors
- Some double sided tape, roller tape or glue
- A cup, glass or something round to score around
Cut the front from the back of the card – you can discard the back or use it in other greeting cards crafts.
Roll the card into a tube. And then stick the ends together using a glue roller or glue. Wait for this to set.
Flatten the tube. I like to flatten it so that any design or photo is central to the top of the DIY gifts box.
Next, use the scissors with the cup or glass to score a semi circle to the front and back at each end. This means that you score 4 times on the card. You will be folding these scored ends.
Fold in each scored end carefully down the lines you created.
Pinch the pointed ends to ensure the flaps stay closed.
And you have finished making your handmade gift box! You just need to work out what to place in your DIY boxes for gifts for all your friends!
I just know that I am going to be making a load of Christmas gift boxes from all my leftover cards this year.
Also – You Can Make These With Other Types Of Paper
You can also use this box tutorial with other kinds of paper. Scrapbook paper, coloured card or origami paper are all good substitutes for the upcycled greeting card.
You can even make them with an old toilet roll inner tube. Just flatten the tube, then score and fold in the ends as with the above. Another perfect zero waste crafts idea!
