Most of us look forward to our family holidays – but that doesn’t mean that they can’t also be stressful. Things like losing luggage, missing connecting flights or trains, managing restless kids, and running into unexpected snafus on your journey can all make holidays more of an ordeal than a relaxing break. Without the right kind of preparation and de-stressing strategies, some of us may even arrive home from holiday more tired than when we left! So, to help you out, here are five strategies that can help make your family holiday a pleasant and (relatively!) stress-free experience:

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

Truly successful holidays typically don’t just happen. They are usually the product of meticulous planning and preparation. Leaving things to the last minute increases the likelihood of missing crucial details that could disrupt your trip. So, make sure that you’ve got the essentials nailed down well ahead of time. If you’re considering renting a car at your destination, speak to a car leasing specialist to make sure that everything is above board and properly ironed out before you pick up the keys. If you’re flying, familiarise yourself with all the details of airports, connecting flights, and so on well before you fly. Contact your accommodation provider to confirm everything is okay with your booking and ask if there’s anything in particular you should know. Take out comprehensive travel insurance for the whole family. And so on. It may seem finicky, but this kind of advance planning and preparation can save you a lot of stress in the long run.

As the time approaches, make sure to check the weather forecast and traffic news for any potential disruptions and pack wisely. This includes packing lots of entertainment for the children to keep them occupied during the journey!

2. Make Travel About the Journey, Not Just the Destination

One common mistake many families make is to focus wholly on the destination. Remember, your holiday begins when you step out of your front door, not when you arrive at your getaway location. As such, you can take a lot of the stress out of travel by thinking of it as part of the experience.

For example, if you’re driving, plan to stop at places of interest along the route, such as national landmarks or quirky roadside attractions. For plane travel, think of the airport as an exciting part of the experience rather than just a stressful conduit to your destination. You could get there early and take the family to an airport restaurant for a pre-flight meal, for example.

3. Choose the Best Travel Hours

Nobody wants to be stuck in a traffic jam with young kids or have their sleep disrupted by early-morning or late-night flights. So, to make things less frustrating, aim to travel at sensible hours. For road trips, consider driving when your children usually sleep, so they’re less likely to be exuberant during the journey. If you’re flying, pick flights that align with your children’s sleeping schedules to minimise disruption. And try to avoid rush hours if at all possible.

4. Stay Organised

Organisation is key to seamless travel. Before your journey, prepare a checklist of everything you need, including passports, boarding passes, snacks, games, chargers, and toiletries.

Make sure that everyone has everything they need within easy reach. For instance, have a separate bag for necessities like wet wipes, snacks, and an extra set of clothes for the kids, and keep it handy at all times. It’s also worth making sure your phones are ready for the trip, whether that means downloading offline maps, saving digital copies of important documents, or researching the best eSIM for Europe before you leave so you can stay connected without the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards. A bit of organisation can eliminate a lot of unnecessary delays and help to nip potential stressful situations in the bud.

5. Be Flexible and Expect the Unexpected

Despite your best efforts, not everything will go according to plan. Flights get delayed, children fall sick, luggage gets lost, and the weather loves to mess up even the most organised plans. As such, it’s essential to stay flexible and maintain a positive mindset.

Instead of seeing stressful situations as roadblocks, try viewing them as part of the adventure. Remember, children will react to situations based on how they see their parents handling them. If you keep calm and tackle the issue with a positive attitude, they’re more likely to do the same.

By following these strategies, you can ensure your family holiday travel is less stressful and more enjoyable. Planning ahead, making the journey part of the holiday, selecting favourable travel hours, staying organised, and being flexible can go a long way towards ensuring a smooth, fun-filled family holiday. Embrace the holiday spirit, and let the adventure begin!
